The Wood Education Programme (WEP) is a charity that provides local people with educational access to woodlands
Working in partnership with Cumbria Woodlands, WEP has created an online database of ‘Demonstration Woodlands’ aimed at woodland owners who have an idea about how they’d like to manage their wood, but are looking for some guidance and practical, ‘real-life’ examples. The Demonstration Woodland owners will be available to contact to arrange a visit, and WEP will be organising a number of open days at selected sites, which will be free to attend, and open to all.
Date: Saturday 22nd March 11:00 - 16:00
Title and Venue: Wood Fuel and Horse Logging – Open Day: Sawrey Ground Plantation, Nr. Hawkshead Hill.
Details: A rare opportunity to see the whole cycle of wood to fuel in action. Gary Primrose manages his woodland using environmentally sustainable practises, part of which includes processing thinnings to fuel a large woodchip boiler heating system. He also employs the services of local horse loggers to extract the timber with minimal impact to the land, and he has successfully obtained numerous grants to help complete the work. This open day will include tours of the woodland and woodchip boiler, as well as plenty of time to watch the horses at work…not to be missed.
Booking essential, please bring your own lunch, tea/coffee will be provided.
To book: Due to high demand, WEP may arrange a second date for this event - please get in touch to express your interest. Please contact WEP via the website, firstname.lastname@example.org, or phone 07771550997
The project is supported by Friends of the Lake District and the Cumbria Community Foundation.
