We will look at:
The first day will focus on woodland establishment: what steps to take to plant trees correctly and how to help them thrive and grow. The day will be a mix of both site visits and classroom based sessions.
- Natural regeneration
- Types of planting stock and species
- Preparing the ground prior to planting
- Planting techniques
- Discussions about how to protect plants from all types of grazing animals and
- What maintenance is required

- Native Woodland Management
Cumbria has internationally important native woodlands which are host to a wonderful range of plants, animals and people that make their living from working in these woodlands. This day will look at the techniques used to enhance, maintain and manage these woods: for example, coppicing.
- Woodland management and forestry careers
This session will focus on the management of broadleaved and coniferous woodlands of all ages. Starting with young woodlands we will look at thinning, how to plan the future for your woodland, support and resources and possible careers.
- Felling, harvesting, extraction and woodfuel
This session will look at felling, harvesting and extraction of timber from woodlands, how to plan it, how to make it happen. We will look at burning wood to keep you warm, big scale to little, how to prepare, store and then burn wood most efficiently.
