Cumbria Woodlands will be hosting a series of lectures and events in 2014, funded by the Rural Growth Network and the Forestry Commission, on current topics within forestry and woodland management
Join Nick Stanley, owner of Witherslack Woodlands, for a walk around their woodyard and advice on sustainably producing woodfuel.
Witherslack have spent the last 20+ years devising a management economy for their 300 ha of semi-natural ancient woodland.
The price of oil, the Renewable Heat Incentive, the RDPE, an obsessive landowner, Cumbria Woodlands and a dedicated Head Woodsman working together have brought it to a well-equipped, perfectly formed and evenly aged team of 6, delivering 1,000 tonnes of logs each year and heating the 5 houses and 7 workshops at Halecat with a Farm 2000 boiler burning the unsaleable (mostly coppice), whilst struggling to procure a bank loan to install a conventional chip boiler to heat Witherslack Hall - a boarding school in a large Victorian pile in the middle of the Woods.
Witherslack has an especially close, happy and symbiotic relationship with Butterfly Conservation that has played a major part in re-creating the right habitat for species close to extinction.
Venue: The Woodyard, Witherslack Estate, Witherslack
