Woodfuel Demonstration Day - FREE event

Saturday 10 January 2015, 10.30am - 3.00pm

Site 1
Stonehurst, Haggs Lane, Cartmel, Grange-Over-Sands : Nearest Post Code: LA11 6HD

Description
Stonehurst Wood is a privately owned woodland, near Cartmel. It is mixed woodland with, primarily native hardwoods, some of which are around an old quarry site. The owners have kindly offered permission for a Woodfuel extraction demonstration; this will be to extract lengths of timber to a suitable location to be processed later. This is an open event which will benefit the community via showing an example of low impact extraction. The benefits of extracting the timber are widespread, it can then be used for Woodfuel and the effects of ongoing management in the woodland will improve the structure and diversity.

Demonstration Details
The demonstration will include the extraction of pole lengths from the woodland to a suitable location, for future processing. This will be done using an alpine tractor. Brash and tops can then be stacked as eco-piles or for burning.

Site 2
Coppy Wood, Meathop, Grange-Over-Sands : Nearest Post Code: LA11 6RB

Description
Great Coppy Wood is a privately owned woodland, near Meathop. It is mixed woodland with areas of old coppice and more recent conifer planting. The owners have kindly offered permission for a Woodfuel demonstration; this will use timber lengths that have previously been cut and extracted to a suitable processing location. This is an open event which will benefit the community via showing an example of firewood processing and how it can be stacked in the wood to enable good drying techniques. The benefits of processing the timber are widespread, it can then be used for Woodfuel and the effects of ongoing management in the woodland will improve the structure and diversity.

Demonstration Details
The demonstration will include the processing of firewood using a Massey Ferguson 135 tractor, with a Palax combi crosscut/splitter. The logs can then be stacked by those attending in a “Holz Hausen”, for drying in the wood ready for burning next season. If necessary, some lengths will be cut with a chainsaw prior to processing
