Complete Woodland Management Planning Support

New support for creating Woodland Management Plans

Producing a UK Forestry Standard compliant woodland management plan is the essential foundation of good woodland stewardship, yet developing a plan is often a barrier to management.

Cumbria Woodlands has partnered with the Sylva Foundation and Evolving Forests to develop essential woodland management planning support and guidance tools for woodland owners and non-specialists in conjunction with the Sylva Foundation’s myForest platform.

Current Developments-

New Woodland Management Planning course on our Canopy Learning platform.

A new complete free-to-access resource for Woodland Management Planning from start to finish. This comprehensive support provides step-by-step assistance to develop a Forestry Commission approved Woodland Management Plan and can be used as a stand-alone resource for any stage of the plan development process.

Developed by the Sylva Foundation, the myForest Woodland Management Plan editor now has an enhanced user experience, with an interactive tour, visual progress indicators, links to the Canopy Learning course and improved navigation.

Evolving Forests

The new course features a brand new video series underpinning the Woodland Management Planning support materials.

Produced by Evolving Forests, this video series is designed to support decision making processes for each step of the creation and development of Woodland Management Plans.

Due Autumn 2024

This resource will work in conjunction with the Woodland Management Planning course and be integrated with the myForest system to support woodland owners and managers to develop UK Forestry Standard compliant Woodland Management Plans.

New video series underpinning the UK Forestry Standard support materials- Produced by Evolving Forests, this video series is designed to support management planning that is ultimately compliant with the UK Forestry Standard. The films will cover a broad spectrum of woodland types and range across England picking up best practice, issues that can be overcome, and opportunities from using the new edition UK Forestry Standard.

Project Remit

The Integrated Woodland Management Support will help owners and non-specialists demystify what is required by providing users with the tools, training and encouragement to create high-quality UK Forestry Standard compliant management plans and making the process of developing a plan interesting, engaging, and, maybe even... fun! This support and the improvement in planning submissions will ultimately lead to improved woodland habitats and increased resilience to climate change.

Woodland management plans and the implementation of UKFS guidelines are often seen as an administrative burden which reduces their adoption and uptake, stalling woodland management.

Improving this process will not only benefit the individual but will increase the quality of planning submissions and drive efficiency within the industry.

This project will employ innovative techniques for training such as Nudge Theory and gamification alongside developing high-quality media and resources that will demystify the planning process.

Canopy learning will be used to host specific content to guide users through the process and work alongside the myForest platform from The Sylva Foundation.

PRESS RELEASE- Nov 2022

Cumbria Woodlands, Sylva Foundation and Evolving Forests awarded £220k from the Woods into Management Forestry Innovation Fund (Forestry Commission).

We are delighted to announce the successful funding for our Integrated Woodland Management Support project.

This project specifically addresses the need to help individuals and the broader industry to improve the quality of UKFS compliant management plans

Producing a UK Forestry Standard compliant management plan is the essential foundation of good woodland stewardship, yet developing a plan is often a barrier to management.

The Integrated Woodland Management Support (IWMS) will help owners and non-specialists demystify what is required by providing users with the tools, training and encouragement to create high-quality UKFS-compliant management plans and making the process of developing a plan interesting, engaging, and, maybe even... fun!

"We are excited to be a part of this project with the Sylva Foundation and Evolving Forests. It will provide much-needed targeted support for anyone looking to manage their woodland, whether you are a new woodland owner, or simply need guidance on certain points of the process. Ultimately, and importantly, this will help anyone who needs to take the next steps to produce a management plan that complies with the UK Forestry Standard" Carrie Hedges (Cumbria Woodlands)

"Producing a UKFS compliant management plan has been seen as a major barrier for many woodland owners across England. Sylva Foundation is excited to be working in collaboration with Cumbria Woodlands and Evolving Forests to create detailed and specific content which is easily accessible at the appropriate stage in the woodland management planning process. We hope that through this project Forestry Commission will not only increase the number of woodlands in active management, but the quality of management plans being delivered" George Dennison (Sylva Foundation)

"Creating woodland management plans can feel like entering a maze of unknowns, questions and technical language. We wanted to add to the written guidance with a new way of guiding people through the process. Using modern media - film, animation and graphics, we will be able to make the production of a woodland management plan not just a necessary piece of paperwork but an interesting and compelling process. To work with Cumbria Woodlands and Sylva, two of the most pioneering NGOs in the sector, with a deep resource of forestry expertise, is a real privilege for us at Evolving Forests." Jez Ralph (Evolving Forests)

This project was funded by the Forestry Commission Forestry Innovation Fund to support UK Forestry Standard compliant Woodland Management Plans.
