Cumbrian Rainforest Project

Cumbria Woodlands have been awarded funding from the Government’s Species Survival Fund to provide a two-year programme of engagement and advice for Temperate Rainforests in Cumbria.

The #Species - Northwest and Southwest Rainforest Restoration project is a £2.6million multi-partnership project between Plantlife, Woodland Trust, Cumbria Wildlife Trust, Rusland Horizons, Cumbria Connect and Cumbria Woodlands and is a programme of Temperate Rainforest restoration and advice, with a whopping 580ha Rainforest aimed to be restored across both Cumbria and the Southwest.

The Cumbrian Rainforest Project is a programme of outreach and engagement events and activities to inspire high quality woodland management and the wider stewardship of the temperate rainforests of Cumbria.

What will the Cumbrian Rainforest Project do?

Through a programme of outreach and engagement events and by providing tailored advice to woodland owners and managers this project will:

Directly support woodland owners and managers to make good decisions for the management of their woodlands in consideration of the distinct and important features of temperate rainforests

Engage and increase knowledge of temperate rainforests for local communities and stewards of the future and inspire them to look after and nurture these precious woodland areas.

Ensure the rainforest narrative becomes an integral part of all future woodland management discussions.

Events will include:

  • A series of community ‘walk and talks’
  • Demonstration events for professionals and those eager to learn more
  • Knowledge-sharing webinars
  • Presence at popular community shows

Advice will:

Directly support small woodland owners to manage woodlands in the temperate rainforest zone by providing guidance and targeted next-steps advice.

By doing this, we aim to:

Increase the quality of knowledge, advice and management of Cumbria’s temperate rainforest landscape.

This project is funded by the Government’s Species Survival Fund. The fund was developed by Defra and its Arm’s-Length Bodies. It is being delivered by The National Lottery Heritage Fund in partnership with Natural England and the Environment Agency.
