Ongoing Work at Haverthwaite Heights
This week we have been back at the Lake District National Park Authority owned woodland at Haverthwaite Heights. Once again we were working with Ulverston-based business Working Class Heroes as we continue our Plantation on Ancient Woodland Site (PAWS) restoration.
Over the past 3 years, the team have worked hard helping to manage the woodland with tree planting, fencing and plenty of bracken bashing.
This week we were working on a different section which was planted around 20 years ago and needed some thinning.
For this piece of work, we were working alongside the Coppice Coop who came along to help train up the folks from Working Class Heroes to take some trees down. The aim was to thin out the area, which is a mix of species, but with a preference to leave the oak and take more of the birch. This will improve light levels and give more space for those remaining trees to develop.
The wood was then taken to the mobile charcoal retort brought along by the Coppice Coop. The retort is a recent addition to the Coppice Coop team and provides an efficient, cleaner process of making charcoal. Given the size of the wood extracted, making charcoal is a good way of adding value to the product and, the National Park will have their very own supply of charcoal!
This project is a fantastic example of partnering with local organisations and businesses, creating opportunities, improving woodland management and using local skills.

The Coppice Coop-
The Coppice Coop is a cooperative business based in the North Lancashire/South Cumbrian area, working towards sustainable woodland management. They supply local firewood sourced from woodland management work, make charcoal, and create a wide range of traditional products such as hazel hurdles, oak gates/fencing, benches and planters. They also run craft and coppice courses.
