Holly was the focus of our most recent day out with Working Class Heroes. We met up again with Liv from the National Park at Haverthwaite Heights to tackle some of the Holly that has become dense in areas of the woodland. We discussed the issues around the Holly and why it needed some management to make some more space for the more mature trees and to allow more light to the ground. The team were then armed with loppers and saws and set loose on the at times impenetrable Holly that had taken over in some areas.

Haverthwaite Heights is an important site for the National Park, but also for Working Class Heroes who have been working with us at the site for years now, and have been involved in a huge variety of jobs including planting, thinning, fencing, species removal and charcoal making. They may work in retail, but their work on the woods over the years means they have a real understanding of the woodlands at Haverthwaite Heights and a connection to the land here. Next month we might head further afield for some different work, but we always keep coming back to Haverthwaite Heights.
